For those that don't know, Magic Lantern is a free open source firmware hack for the Canon series of video capable DSLRs. It adds features such as On-screen audio meters, Zebra stripes (video peaking), Custom Cropmarks for 16:9, 2.35:1, 4:3 and any other format, Control of focus and bracketing, among other features, including HDR video. All of this is possible by simply placing the proper files onto the SD card!
As of until recently, it was impossible for the Magic Lantern developers to make a hack for the 7D, due to its different processor.
3 years ago, part of the development team at Magic Lantern started a build of Magic Lantern for the 7D. He was not able to run the Canon firmware with his DSLR, however, Magic Lantern needs to run parallel with the Canon firmware to operate properly. "Until last week, when g3gg0 had an Aha! moment and discovered how to load Canon firmware from autoexec.bin code."
The first analysis shows that porting is straightforward (more or less), and most features will work without major code changes, as Magic Lantern does not have to run on both DIGIC processors. Basic features such as zebra and focus peaking are already working, so you may expect an alpha version to be available soon.
Porting to the 7d will be straightforward, due to similar internal components, and its been released in alpha stages.
